Description
The protonmotive pressure, βmΞ H+ or pmP [kPa], is an extension of Peter Mitchellβs concept of the protonmotive force pmF, based on Fickβs law of diffusion and Einsteinβs diffusion equation, accounting for osmotic pressure (corresponding to the diffusion term in the pmF) and electric pressure (the electric term or membrane potential in the pmF). The linearity of the generalized flow-pressure relationship explains the non-ohmic flow-force dependence in the proton leak rate as a function of membrane potential.
The total motive pressure (motive = electric + chemical) is distinguished from the partial components by subscript βmβ, βmΞ H+,
βmΞ H+ = βdΞ H+ + βelΞ p+
Abbreviation: pmP, βmΞ H+ [kPa]
