Comments on the Perspective and BEC

From the BEC editors; up to 2020-05-06
  • Beleza Jorge (Assistant editor): I’m very pleased with your invitation! Thank you very much! Of course that you can count with me. I have a lot to learn ..
  • Bishop David J: I like the idea of having a (shortened) perspective that accompanies the much longer, and more detailed, “living” publications. In this way, the published perspective will in some ways provide a “taste” and direct readers to the living publication. Related to this, I am sympathetic to the author issue raised by the editor – who is probably just following the journal guidelines that all authors have to have made a significant contribution to the manuscript. Is there a way to follow his recommendation of having a shorted author list or consortium on the perspective and the full list of “supporters” or “contributors” on the living publication? - I think the BEC concept is good. While brevity is always welcome in scientific writing, an online-only journal removes much of the need for strict page limits I think. There may be a way to integrate your previous preprint server concept with the BEC so the MitoFit Preprint and BEC ‘talk’ to each other (and/or integrate BEC with other preprint servers as I believe PLosOne does)? The idea of a ‘living’ publication is a really interesting concept. You may need to think of how older versions will be archived and the newest version will be identified? Would you also allow this for other articles (including original research)? I guess the traditional academic model would be to publish a newer/updated review after sufficient time had passed? - No problem to join as an associate editor and hopefully help the journal to grow.
  • Blier Pierre U: I really like the idea of a "Living Communication" in a new open access professional journal dedicated to bioenergetic (Bioenergetic Communications). I also think it is really wise and strategic to link it to a shorter version in a high rank journal to clearly justify and define new concepts, nomenclature and paradigms in cellular bioenergetics. This will position and state at the beginning the mission of the new journal as an essential reference in mitochondrial bioenergetic studies (procedures and interpretations). I am also very pleased by your offer to join your Associate Editor's panel and I would be particularly keen to be involved in comparative and evolutionary aspects. I also think it is really wise and strategic to link it to a shorter version in a high rank journal to clearly justify and define new concepts, nomenclature and paradigms in cellular bioenergetics.
  • Chakrabarti Lisa: I love the idea of the journal and would be excited to be part of the associate editor team, thanks for inviting me. - I really like the new version. It's snappy and could be printed and kept in a lab book for regular reference by trainees - so extremely practical too! I guess we lost the pig somewhere along the line! However, the idea to link this one to the more comprehensive version in your new format journal is elegant. I guess I would eventually need to figure out the full 'living' paper concept. I imagine it has something to do with continuous public peer review, I'll wait for your clarification on the mechanisms of that.
  • Chinopoulos Christos: I agree with the strategy. Furthermore, I volunteer for Associate Editor for Bioenerg Commun, should the need arise. I am already an Associate Editor for Journal of Bioenergetics and Biomembranes for some time now, I know how it works.
  • Coen Paul M: The concept of BEC as an option for rapid communication on new science relating to bioenergetics and HHR is a great one. - I think the concept of a shorter perspective linked to a longer “living publication” that would be updated to remain current/state-of-the-art is an excellent one. Using a Consortium Author that includes all authors on the perspective is a good suggestion by Christof and should be considered too.
  • Galina Antonio: I like the proposal of BEC. I agree be Associate Editor.
  • Garcia-Roves Pablo Miguel: I really like what you are proposing and your idea of the Bioenergetic Communications (we discussed this topic during my visit in Innsbruck earlier in March). I agree with you that this is a good approach and the philosophy and rationale behind this initiative is in line with my way of thinking and how Science data sharing should be. Unfortunately, Science business has some rules that, so far, we should follow if we want to continue doing research. .. I will support Bioenergetics Communications no doubt. - In relation to the Bioenergetics Communications and your decision to propose me as an Associate Editor of the journal, I should say that I feel honored and, of course, I accept.
  • Iyer Shilpa: I really liked bioenergetics communications!! If you feel I could assist you all in some way, I would be happy to do so. - I welcome the opportunity to serve on the editorial team and to assist in the development of the journal.
  • Kaambre Tuuli: I am gladly agree to join as the Associate Editor to Bioenergetics Communications.
  • Kowaltowski Alicia J: Sounds like an interesting experiment! I think we need more publication venues controlled by scientists in the field .. Count me in.
  • Krako Jakovljevic Nina: First of all my congratulations for such a concise paper and very positive feedback from the Nature Metabolism Chief Editor. The paper is now short with clear message, easy to read and as such I believe it will get higher visibility and citation rate respect to the longer version. - Very interesting concept of living communication that I will happily support and I think such live, continuously updated paper will be important, because people will get back to it many times in order to check for updates and in that way more easily acquire new terminology and important concepts that 'states and rates' communicate. Thank you for the invitation to join as an Associate Editor to Bioenergetics Communications which I am happy to accept. Thank you for thinking about Early Carrier Investigators and giving us so many opportunities to grow.
  • Larsen Steen: I have been looking at the manuscript, it is an impressive work. It is easy to read and gives the reader the clarity of the nomenclature. - Great initiative with the BEC journal. Of course I would like to join as an associate editor.
  • Larsen Terje S: The initiative with Bioenergetics Communications opens the possibility for publication of the MitoFit Preprint as a Living Communication. I am willing to serve as an associate editor for Bioenergetics Communications.
  • Lemieux Helene: I really like the new short version of the manuscript. It is easier to read and include a lot of useful information to use the proper nomenclature. - I will be very happy to join as an Associate Editor for Bioenergetics Communications.
  • Moisoi Nicoleta: I am happy with the strategic decisions. These allow both having the high visibility of the Nat Metab perspective paper and having a ‘living paper’ in BEC that covers all the work on the concepts. Great that Fig 2a stays in the shortened version! - I am happy to be listed associate editor for BEC.
  • Molina Anthony JA: I support this publication strategy and agree to serve as an Associate Editor for Bioenergetics Communications. Thank you for including me in this effort.
  • O'Gorman Donal: I have read the manuscript and think it will help with the standardisation of nomenclature if published in Nature Metabolism. I also like the idea of the Nat Met perspective being the 'front cover' for the 'Living Communication' document to be published by BEC - this would route a lot of activity and citations to this article (I also like the content and layout on the site). I think the editor has a valid point about the list of authors. I think the author list on the front of the article should contain the COST action or 'active coauthors' with reference to 'supporting coauthors' or 'Consortium coauthors' that would be listed at the end of the perspective. I have seen this before with genetic papers in particular but not with a Perspective I must admit.
  • Oliveira Marcus F: I really liked your initiative to launch the new journal Bioenergetics Communications. I really want to be part of this remarkable and valuable movement for better science devoted to Bioenergetics.
  • Orynbayeva Zulfiya: Of course, the original manuscript carried comprehensive information covering the fundamentals of mitochondriology, which is currently in high demand due to rekindled interest in principles and role of metabolism. Yet, there were no attempts to summarize and systematize the well-established and newly emerged concepts of bioenergetics. On top of that, you rise a very important problem of harmonization and standardization of terminology! I highly respect your enormous work in adapting the manuscript to the special format with accordance to Dr Schmitt recommendation. - I carefully looked over the pdf file you sent. Shortening the initial 17000 words down to 3085 words in the way you did it is an exceptional work. Condensing the comprehensive information that was nicely structured and visualized with amazing graphics to short but bold and sharp paper which carries the essence is just exemplar! A publication in such high impact journal as Nature Met no doubt will serve as a podium to make the results of years of your efforts seen on a global scale and enable further promotion of the mitochondria metabolism with stronger credits. Of note, I was using ‘Mitochondrial respiratory states and rates’ as teaching material and the students found it a compelling “bioenergetics textbook”. So, I am glad that the main body will be available as a full range publication in Bioenergetics Communication. And yet, the concept of Living Communication is great for allowing published works to remain dynamic. - I carefully read about the BEC and I could not agree more with the mission and principles of the journal. The study methodology is the most influential in many ways, but often journals put limits and as a result the Methods section contains less details than one would wish to see. There are many methodological and other aspects that could be given their due attention in the pages of the BEC. For example, the issue of publishing the positive data only…… or requirement for the large set of data …. Many top journals would consider a large amount of data over short succinct but solid experiments as it was normal practice in 1960-70th. So many questions could be brought to the table in attempt to support different kinds of studies. Thus, BEC is going to have a unique niche among other journals. I believe that many researchers would agree that the cooperation/research based on friendly open communication and discussion rather than stiff competition would better serve for the global science success.
  • Sandi Carmen: Thanks for your email and for your invitation to serve as associate editor to Bioenergetics Communication. I gladly accept. Congratulations and good luck with this new endeavor!
  • Stocker Roland: Thank you for the kind invitation to join BEC as Associate Editor. The webpage looks great! If it is helpful for you to have my name included, please go ahead. Please note though that I don’t consider myself an expert in bioenergetics (my area of expertise is more in ‘oxidative stress’).
  • Treberg Jason R: The publication model is rather interesting. Especially the planned funding/fee structure. But I will confess I am of mixed minds on the open review idea. Ultimately it should be workable although I can see potential pitfalls. However, I see there is even an opportunity for authors to opt out so my tentative answer would be yes I would like to accept the invitation to join on. - I do wish there was a one-stop journal or resource (hell even an up-to-date textbook) for all things bioenergetics. - It seems this article is raising an interesting problem and I like the idea of a living pre-print or publication, but I can appreciate how there a few viable options for such. .. This is an intriguing idea and I think there are some great opportunities with this new journal. Many things in the approach being taken are quite appealing. I do have to confess, to me, bioenergetics is such a wide field, from the tiny scale of electron transfer efficiency and protein-molecular interactions up to integrating bioenergetic models across levels of biological organization for understanding how changes in climate and other disruptions alter energy provision and demands at an ecological scale.
  • Viscomi Carlo: As for your offer to join your new journal as associate editor.
  • Zdrazilova Lucie: It would be great pleasure to join your journal as an Assistant editor .. So, count me in.
  • Zorzano Antonio: Many thanks for your message, and your great effort to publish the different manuscripts. Your proposal sounds great to me so just let me know when you need help. As to the journal BEC, many thanks for the invitation, and I am very happy to accept your invitation.
